As a reminder: We are starting an after/before school program. To clarify, this is different from the Springboard opportunity. This would be for Sokolowski students taught by Sokolowski staff. We are planning to start small and pilot this program when we come back from break, and if successful, scale to more students. Please see more details below.

Last but not least- I want to emphasize this opportunity is for ALL Sokolowski School staff.

  • After/Before School Teaching Idea:

[Deadline Extended] MLK Day Essay/Poem/Drawing

All students work is now be due on Jan. 8th, 2021.

The theme this year is “I am the Dream”.

This year we would like for students to focus on the events that have manifested since Dr. King’s Dream in 1963.  Rather than request an essay only, as we’ve done in past practices, we are extending the opportunity for students to express “I am the Dream” via essay, poem or drawing based on their grade level.

For grades K-2 we are asking students to submit a drawing.

For grades 3-4 we are asking for students to submit an essay or poem.

HERE are some guidelines by grade level. – (This link is most helpful to for your students to engage with this project.)

Here are 10 writing prompts suggestions you can use after the break.

Hour of Code for Teachers [Today]!

Hour of Code for Teachers!

Today, December 14th 3-4pm

This is an opportunity to learn more about coding and try it out for yourself!  Join us for some computer science fun as we model some of the Hour of Code 2020 activities.

Zoom link: https://chelseaschools.zoom.us/j/91486211386

________

For the past few years, our elementary students have participated in the Hour of Code during the month of December, which is also Computer Science Month. Even though we are currently in remote learning, we hope that all classes can participate in a virtual Hour of Code at some point over the next two weeks. The Hour of Code is a global movement introducing tens of millions of students worldwide to computer science, inspiring kids to learn more, breaking stereotypes, and leaving them feeling empowered. Learn more on our site.

——————

During the Month of December, participate in the Hour of Code with your class to introduce coding and computer science.

Step 1: Introduce Students to the Hour of Code by showing one of the “What is Creativity?” videos and/or another video. There are also several great computer science videos and related activities on BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr.

Step 2:  Use the Hour of Code Choice Board for your grade level (Grades 1-2  (make a copy) — Grades 3-5 (make a copy). You can model an activity whole-class, direct students to a specific activity–partners and trios are great for coding tasks!–or share the choice board with students. (We have selected activities that students can access independently and that work well on Chromebooks.)

Next Steps…

For January, we are working on updating the computational thinking/coding mini units (Chelsea DLCS YLPs) and adding more resources to the DLCS Curriculum Drive. Stay tuned for more information!
